Reflection 2- Pedro Montero

How to Help People with Disabilities Feel Welcome | Psychology Today
The second presentation in our speech class revolved around disabilities. Our three groups were assigned different impairments to discuss. These presentations were aimed at improving our knowledge about specific impairments and ways to communicate with people who have those impairments.  The first group's presentation discussed physical impairments, spinal cord disability, and brain disabilities. The second group (my group) presented on vision and hearing. Finally, the third group spoke about learning disabilities, invisible disabilities, and psychological disorders.
My group, which was group two, revolved around hearing and vision impairments. Our presentation discussed the ways a parent can figure out if their child has a hearing or visual impairment. We also discussed how these two groups are educated and the history revolving the two disabilities. Our presentation also talked about negative generalizations people make based on those disabilities and why they are incorrect. This was the section that corresponded to me. I talked about how people believe all deafness is the same, how deaf people are seen as less intelligent than normal people, and many more unjust generalizations. There are many misconceptions which I discussed and debunked. Another section which was assigned to me was an interview with a person that has a visual impairment. I asked a family friend of mine to participate in the interview since he had a visual impairment. The experience was very engaging and the interview gave a closer insight into what life with a visual disability is like on a daily basis.
The first group's topics were very interesting. They effectively spread  information through the use of a slides presentation. This presentation talked about different types of physical impairments and agencies that help with the disabilities. They included videos in their presentation which gave information detailing physical and brain disabilities. These videos were well implemented and greatly helped the presentation. This group had a very smooth presentation and was very well done.
The third group's presentation was just as amazing if not better. They did a great job with their project. All the information was useful, it felt like they really took their time to gather points that were memorable. I particularly enjoyed this groups work the most because in my opinion their topics were the most interesting. They also included one or two videos to share information regarding their disabilities. The only problems the group had were technical difficulties which the professor was very understanding of.
This group project was very well done in my opinion. Our group communicated effectively and all problems were quickly resolved. I think we did a better job in communicating with each other than in previous projects. Our group leader was also very helpful. Thanks to her, all projects have come out amazing. Additionally, our group did a great job in dividing our workload. I never felt that I worked extra or that someone did not complete their part of the project. Throughout the presentations I learned a great deal regarding disabilities and I now feel very confident in communicating with those who have impairments.

Visual and Hearing Impairments: by Lila Sharma

Presentation is important to persuade about something. We were in group presentation in our speech class and it was our second presentation. Our topic was ‘disabilities’ which includes the information, ideas and knowledge of it. Presentation were interesting and convincible through PowerPoint. It was understandable and informative.

Firstly, Parents are first friend and home are a small world for children. If parents react too much to their children, they may get angry, bargain unnecessarily, cry and feel lost and alone. Hence, if parents are understanding at that age, then there is less chance for problem to exist. If a child has an impairment, then it’s not a good idea to compare them with another normal child. Because, they won’t be able to express themselves as normal child does which causes them to feel guilty.

Secondly, we talked about visual impairment. It means having lower visual capacity or, totally cannot see, so those people feel darkness of world. However, if capable person understands and motivate them, they feel positivity and feel happy to enjoy their life. Additionally, we explained about history of blindness in the 1260 A.D after which people perspective of visually impaired changed.

King Louis established the first organization for the blind. At that time, blind people did not have any education method and Braille was not developed. The 19th century Denis Diderot, who was a French philosopher invented the Braille writing system. Organization started to increase day by day. National Federation of the Blind (NEB) and American Council of the Blind (ACB) are the organization of blind people while in here, there is Florida outreach center for the blind. On the other side, totally blind person needs more support than slight vision impaired person. Fortunately, visual impairment person can use some aids and devices for mobility such as dogs which are regarded as best friend, so they train them and get help to pick up things and guidance for walk. Likewise, canes which has ray electronic and ultra-sensor help them to walk. On the other side, they can use devices such as jaws screen reader, able data, and most importantly Braille displays.

Thirdly, we discussed about hearing impairment. It means a full or partial decrease in the ability to detect or understand sounds. It is caused by many factors, including; genetic, age, illness, physical trauma etc. According to the history of deafness, Benderizine monk, Pedro Ponce de lean who created a means to teach deaf people to speak using a variety of hand gestures and symbols. Nowadays, sign

language become more common, a unique identity. Unfortunately, millions deaf people do not have access to study and some deaf people do not have the protection of human rights. They are depriving from education, employment, medical care etc. Deaf people can do anything that hearing people can do expect to hear clearly. Fortunately, they can use some devices and aids; such as sign language, speech from text, voice recognition software and alerting devices etc. We gave audience the tips about how to communicate with hearing impaired and utilizing the resources in Miami Dade Collage including special services, sign language, interpreter etc. On the other hand, we discussed the problem faced by disable person such as domestic violence, sexual abuse etc.

In my opinion, people with visual and hearing impairment are still facing challenges for education, job opportunities etc. This requires serious attention of concerned authorities to come up with possible solutions.

Including people with disabilities in daily activities and motivating them to have equal roles to other people who do not have a disability is one of the things that motivates me the most on a day-to-day basis. This involves more than simply encouraging people; It is necessary to guarantee that there are adequate policies and practices in force in a community or organization. Precisely our class in this project highlighted important aspects of disabilities that affect our society. I believe that there is no better way to understand and integrate ourselves with how truly certain disabilities affect our society and as ourselves as members of it we can help these people who have these disabilities. Above all, we should highlight that we should be accepted and integrated into this society regardless of the condition that we present.

Group 1 had the responsibility of presenting spinal cord desability and brain desabilities. I found it really impressive how the group managed to collect all the necessary information to make us understand and become aware of how these impairments affect our society and what are the ways that our institutions provide them to achieve integration. Once again this group knew how to use technology to get their message and content more effectively, such as the inclusion of their voices in the slides, they can understand them more clearly. Excellent work .

Special mention to group 2, in which I am a participant, we were in charge of presenting hearing and visual disabilites. This resarch was very special to me because I have felt a special appreciation and admiration for people with disabilities since I was little, even having a childhood friend with hearing disabilities. I think the experience of the last presentation helped us with this one to work more as a team. The interview with one of the people with one of the disabilities, helped to really understand everyone what it means to live with a disability. Despite having some technical difficulties, I believed that the objective was achieved.
Group 3 was in charge of closing this series of presentations exposing learning desabilities, psychological disorders, and invisible disabilites, as the main idea that people need to persuade other in order to make a real differnce in our communities. With the combination of technology and messages that really move you, this group managed to convey their idea. I think that you have to start the team down, and that you can get very good results when we do it .

The integration of people with disabilities means understanding the relationship between the way people function and how they participate in society, as well as ensuring that everyone has the same opportunities to participate in all aspects of life to the best of their abilities and desires. .

Reflection (2)

Through this virtual learning process students have adapted to different ways of learning. Students continue to learn new lessons throughout this process. This presentation amazed me not only because of how well every group worked together and projected their information but also because it showed how well classmates have adapted to online learning. Presentations only get better; students build better teamwork skills and organization. My group has built great communication skills among all group members and each presentation we realize where we went wrong and learn from it. I know for a fact all my classmates will make their next presentations even better than this recent one and the first one we ever did.

This presentation was very interesting because we learned about different disabilities. Throughout this presentation there was different ways of sharing the information all students did some research such as interviewing people with disabilities, causes behind the disabilities, how the disabilities developed overtime, resources provided for the disabilities, etc. It was eye opening to learn how people with disabilities feel and handle day to day situations. Everyone more or less has a better understanding now after researching all about disabilities.

I had to talk about the history of visual impairment and how to communicate with a visually impaired person. Learning about the history and communication of this disability was amazing because I learned things I would have never imagined. I learned from the proper way to communicate with someone who has this disability to seeing how resources developed for the visually impaired overtime. I was assigned a very interesting topic because I also discovered how braille came to be which is basically a reading form for the blind. It’s important to learn new things every day and this presentation definitely taught my group members and I important information based on disabilities.

My group did a great job organizing the presentation and making it appealing. Our leader did an amazing job assigning each and everyone one of us a topic and overall guided us throughout our presentation. We all communicate very well and help one another with questions or any type of concern through our group chat in WhatsApp. I think we did an even better job in this presentation compared to our very first one. It seems to me that my group is adapting better to this whole online learning situation and we only continue getting better each time.

Overall, I think all groups did a great job, just the fact that each presentation looked like it had a lot of time put into it is incredible. The presentations were well done, organized, and provided factual information. This presentation taught a lot of us to not judge others with disabilities and most importantly treat everyone equally because at the end of the day everyone has feelings and a disability shouldn’t label who a person is. I enjoyed learning throughout this presentation, and I think it was a very eye-opening assignment for all students. I’m excited to continue learning throughout the rest of the presentations that we have left to do.

Presentation 2. Reflection Darian Uriarte

Our class discussed important aspects about disability in our society. People with disabilities are capable and powerful. Using this idea, we were able to change our perspective around people with special needs. Group 1 presented on physical impairments, spinal cord disability and brain disabilities; on the other hand, Group 2 developed vision and hearing impairments and finally Group 3 worked on learning disabilities, psychological disorders, and invisible disabilities.

Group one discussed physical impairments, spinal cord disability and brain disabilities. In order to do this, they used a google slides presentation. Unlike other groups, this team used a useful technological idea. They recorded they voices while presenting, which made the presentation smoothly and clear. Essentially, they talked about history, the agencies involved and the importance of disabilities rights. In addition, they played two interesting videos that effectively gave us an overview on physical impairments and brain disabilities. As a matter of fact, the students had a good organization of the ideas and topics. From their interesting themes to their confidence while presenting, group one impressed many of us.

Group two integrated by me, presented on vision and hearing impartments. I have to say that working on this presentation was exciting. We created an inspirational video to help people with disabilities believe in themselves. Basically, each one of us made a short video saying a motivational quote while holding a paper with a key word on it. After putting it the together, we expressed the concept that everyone is a unique person created for a specific purpose. In addition, we performed several interviews. The ACCESS department was highly informative about what MDC has to offer. Together with this, having the opportunity to interview both a blind a deaf person was extremely helpful. Finally, we made a poster and a brochure in order to encourage others to support people with disabilities.

Group three on the other hand worked on learning disabilities, psychological disorders, and invisible disabilities. They intended for their audience to have a better knowledge of people with these types of impairments. As stated by the students, your present circumstances do not determine where you can go. By coordinating their ideas and providing quality content, group three did well on the presentation. The videos that Group 3 used in their speech were really enjoyable. In addition, they worked as a team to deliver a message, which I believe they were able to accomplish. People need to persuade others to make a difference in our communities. Many people out there need our support.

Thanks to these presentations we have made tremendous progress improving our speech skills. I am proud of myself since being able to present confidently in front of a large audience was not something easy for me before. This being said, groups one, two, and three performed an incredible job discussing their topics. Additionally, the support materials used by the students were very impressive and professional. Although, we had a few technical difficulties, the overall outcome for this presentation was remarkably high.

Daniela Caraballo Vision & Hearing Impairment

Working together is the most important aspect in a group dynamic. In my group particularly, we always try to better ourselves as a person and mainly as a whole. Our pervious mishaps only brought us together and stronger. Our weakness turned into our strong feature. Tackling everything one step at a time.
For this assignment, every group was given a topic on a specific disability; however, for Group 2 we were assigned vision and hearing impairment. Our leader broke everything up perfectly and evenly. Each student understood what had to be done and the requirements that needed to be completed. Despite of it all, as a group we could have been stronger if certain individuals could communicate about their thoughts or ideas. Hopefully, the next one they will come around and give some insight. Overall, when one states his or her thoughts the group can achieve only, but greatness.
My part particularly consisted finding methods of ways to communicate with those that are vision/hearing impaired & as well the global perspective on those misconceptions. Gathering information in ways those that are disabled are able to communicate with those that are in the same community. Unique apps are compared to those that were familiar with today provide the same sort of experience and or aspect. Moreover, searching of the misconception that individuals around the world think of those that are disabled believe must have or must be like. Not to mention, being part of a video at the end that enlisted a nice virtual message to those.
Furthermore, not only we had to do research among our particular issue, but as well incorporate certain chapter from the book we use in class to our information. That part was tedious; however, with team effort and communicating everything went right into place. Everyone had unique assignments that were completed for the project. For instance, there was a small group that took a step further. Constructing a video for the class with someone they know that is vision or hearing impaired.
All in all, as the days go by we better ourselves as a group with our certain techniques. Creating videos of interviews and a virtual message for the class to demonstrate how unique it is. Anything can be accomplished with a strong group.
